OK, so I can understand why many of you find this article really annoying. I can understand why people go on and on about how menopause is the most beautiful thing that could happen to a woman.
I can understand women “going off the rails” because a man can’t help but think it must be a deep personal crisis if you are taking so much time out of the day to cry for no reason.
However, I can’t help but feel that by doing this we are discounting and downgrading women who are having it much harder than us.
What we need to take into consideration is that for the vast majority of women suffering from ‘the worst of the worst’ menopausal symptoms, it is a choice.
Waking up at 4am with a hot flush? It’s something you can choose to do or not do.
Waking up at 3am with a cold that feels like you are melting? It’s something you can choose to do or not do.
Waking up at 3am with a hot flash? It’s something you can choose to do or not do.
Waking up at 3am with cramps? It’s something you can choose to do or not do.
Waking up at 3am with the crippling feeling that you are about to throw up? It’s something you can choose to do or not do.
And so on and so on.
So when you hear a woman describe menopause as the most wonderful time of her life because she has so much energy, free time and money because she doesn’t have to deal with kids or a husband etc…You are missing the point.
Women go through menopause because they made the choice to have their period stop.
And I don’t think we are understanding that women have more power than us in this situation because they are making a choice that we are not.
